Though there was treachery within the ranks of the samurai, most lived ascetic lives and valued courage, bravery and honor. After defeating Xandred and destroying all the Nighlok for good, as well as sealing the Netherworld forever, the Samurai's parents gave them a little push into their new lives as normal people. In addition to bringing a dagger and sword, samurai also brought deerskin, which served as a place holder for target practice and a seat for a warrior about to be executed. They were determined to maintain their dignity even if they were beheaded, so they blackened their teeth and tied their hair into a top knot before going to war.
They were unquestioningly loyal to their overlords, and at the end of their military campaign expected to be compensated with land grants.ĭuring the invasion of Japan by Kublai Khan in 1274, samurai planned for war by preparing themselves carefully in the event they were killed during the campaign. A quick response to an attack often meant the difference between life and death. Men like Miyamoto Musashi of the early 17th century were devoted to this.
In a more complex meaning, this Way is a complete devotion to a view of life based on the sword, its mystical qualities, and techniques of its use.

Active for about 700 years, samurai were typically rural landowners or stewards of land. The katana, worn in a form of sash known as an obi, and the blade of the sword facing upwards, meant that in theory a warrior could arm himself and strike an opponent in one single, swift movement. In its simplest, the Way of the Sword is an intense focus on learning how to use the samurai sword in the most effective way. Samurai warriors trained in military arts, but they also cultivated philosophy, art, calligraphy and writing in their pursuits.
